Warren Comes Back Against Parkersburg South
< < Back toThe Warren Warriors used an explosive second half performance from their defense to overcome a 20 point halftime deficit and defeat the Parkersburg South Patriots 47-39 Friday.
With the Patriots leading, 26-0, late in the second quarter, Jake Powell captured some momentum for Warren when he capped off a 35-yard drive by scoring a 10-yard touchdown to get the Warriors on the board.
The Warriors maintained their momentum in the second half, as their defense forced fumbles on both of Parkersburg South’s first two drives in the second half. Warren capitalized on the Patriots’ miscues with touchdowns after both fumble recoveries. The Warriors went on to score 41 total points in the second half.
Quarterback Austin Klintworth led the Warren offensive attack Friday. He totaled 119 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-18 passing. Klintworth also carried the ball 15 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Parkersburg South jumped out to an early lead when Brandon Moss broke off a 78-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game. The score was Moss’ only carry of the game. The Patriots scored another quick touchdown when Logan Dilliner blocked a Warren punt and Logan Snyder recovered it in the end zone to put the Patriots up, 12-0.
The Patriots’ defense stifled the Warriors’ offense for most of the first half, as Warren could only manage six points before halftime.
Following a fourth-down sack, Parkersburg South went on a 64-yard drive. Garrett Gilkeson completed four passes on the drive including a 16-yard connection with Brendon Schwendeman. Three plays later Gilkeson connected with Schwendeman again for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Gilkeson finished the game with 155 yards and three touchdowns on 10-of-15 passing. He also ran for 34 yards on 12 carries.
Despite the early lead, turnovers caught up to the Patriots in the second half, as Warren got back to .500 on the season.
Warren (2-2) plays the Meigs Marauders (2-2) next week. Parkersburg South (1-3) will look to regroup against University High School (3-1).
