RedStorm Take Down Miami-Middletown
< < Back to redstorm-take-down-miami-middletownRio Grande dominated Miami University-Middletown in the Saunders Insurance Tipoff Classic, earning an impressive 127-67 win. Rio has started the season undefeated at 2-0.
The RedStorm carried their previous game’s offensive energy into this one by breaking the school record of 122 points in a game, raising the bar to 127. Rio scored 113 in its opener against Wilberforce.
Rio was able to put Miami-Middletown at an 0-2 record. This game was completely different from last year’s nail-biter against the Thunderhawks, which resulted in a 93-90 loss for the RedStorm. During Saturday’s game, Rio was able to hold the lead throughout the entire night.
At halftime, Rio led 64-31 and all members on the deep roster were able to see playing time. The second half allowed for the reserves to see plenty of time on the court, as they played the majority of the half.
Rio shot 59 percent from the field and sank 70 percent of its free throw shots. The RedStorm also outrebounded the Thunderhawks 55-33.
Leading in points on the night was freshman Kaylyn Gambill at 26 points, followed by sophomore Sarah Bonar at 21 points. Bonar led the team with 10 rebounds and completed a double-double.
Gambill had an outstanding showing with eight 3-pointers, taking the school record for most in a game. She also got the most playing time on the floor at more than 18 minutes.
Junior guard Brianna Thomas was able to continue her offensive success from Tuesday, contributing 18 points and leading the team in assists with six on the night.
Both freshman forwards, Brooke Marcum and Audra Clark were able to add on to the score; Brooke with 11 points and Audra with 10.
Rio Grande returns to Newt Oliver Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 12, to face Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Last year’s game was a close victory for Rio Grande with a final score of 66-60. The RedStorm hope to repeat last year’s win to further this season’s winning record.
