An Athens man has died from injuries received in a two vehicle crash on U.S. Route 50 and Radford road last week.

The Franklin County Coroner's Office reports that Boyd Bobo, 80, passed away at Grant Medical Center shortly before noon Monday.

Bobo and Williamsburg resident William Hoover both suffered serious injuries and were flown by MedFlight to Grant Medical Center in Columbus after a Tuesday afternoon crash.

Bobo was driving a 1988 Chevrolet truck northbound on Radford Road when he allegedly failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of Route 50 at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a release by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He pulled into the path of Hoover, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet truck westbound on Route 50.

Witnesses at the crash scene told troopers that Bobo appeared to stop before coming into the westbound lanes of traffic but did not yield to Hoover’s vehicle.

“When (Bobo) was coming out from Radford Road, apparently a semi was blocking his view and he failed to see (Hoover’s) truck coming,” said Sgt. Aaron Hayes, one of the responding highway patrolmen.

A MedFlight helicopter landed on Route 50, closing the highway to traffic for about 30 minutes.

The westbound side of the road was down to one lane for several hours while troopers investigated and cleaned up the scene.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Bobo was in critical condition at Grant Medical Center, while Hoover was in stable condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The crash, which is one of many that have occurred at the same intersection, should serve as a lesson for other drivers, troopers say.

“It’s important for people to remember to look twice when they pull out onto a road,” Hayes said. “Failure to yield is the second leading cause of fatal crashes and I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes up to number one soon.”

Albany and Richland Area Volunteer Fire Departments assisted at the scene of the crash.
