Close To 2,2000 Tanks Registered Under New Law
< < Back to close-22000-tanks-registered-under-new-lawAbout 2,200 aboveground storage tanks have already been registered in compliance with a new West Virginia law to safeguard against harmful spills.
The state Department of Environmental Protection on Thursday urged tank owners to come forward with any questions so they can register on time.
Most aboveground tanks must be registered in a new law passed in the wake of a January chemical spill into West Virginia's biggest drinking water supply. The spill contaminated tap water for 300,000 people for days.
The registration period opened June 10. All registrations are due Oct. 1.
So far, most registered tanks have been in McDowell and Wyoming counties. The department expects registrations to increase exponentially.
The new tank law also requires many tanks to undergo annual inspections, craft emergency response plans and more.
