Iraq Vet Cited For Therapeutic Pet Ducks
< < Back to iraq-vet-cited-therapeutic-pet-ducksAn Iraq war veteran in eastern Ohio is facing a $150 fine or worse after getting a citation for his pet ducks, which he says are therapeutic.
Darin Welker of West Lafayette, in Coshocton County, says he was cited with a minor misdemeanor on June 23 for having 14 ducks.
West Lafayette, about 80 miles east of Columbus, banned residents from keeping fowl and other farm animals in 2010.
Welker has a court hearing Wednesday and faces a fine of $150.
But Welker is more worried about not being allowed to keep the ducks.
He says the birds help him mentally with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and can help his physical therapy by keeping him more active.
West Lafayette Mayor Jack Patterson declined to comment.
