Athens Police Investigating Uptown Sexual Assault
< < Back toUpdate 4:49 p.m. An incident in downtown Athens led to the arrest of a man on a sexual battery charge early Thursday morning.
Alvaro Luis Mangual-Manfredi, 25, was booked on the charge at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the jail's website.
The Athens Police Department released information about a 22-year-old woman who reported that she was the victim of a sexual assault Thursday at 2:20 a.m. in the "uptown area." The report said a suspect had been taken into custody on a felony offense but police officials would not release the name of the suspect until he was indicted or a preliminary hearing was held, according to Lt. Jeff McCall of the Athens Police Department.
An Athens County grand jury will meet next week, and might be presented with the case.
According to Athens County Municipal Court records, Mangual-Manfredi was charged by Athens police after he allegedly had sexual intercourse with a woman "in a public place." The woman allegedly appeared to be intoxicated and said she did not recollect the events.
Mangual-Manfredi had an initial appearance in municipal court on Thursday, where bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety. The police had requested $10,000 bond with no 10 percent allowed.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 15 at 2 p.m.
Athens Police say they have a suspect accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman in custody.
The assault was reported to police overnight Thursday.
The assault allegedly happened in the uptown area.
Police say no other information will be released pending their investigation.
