Light Up The Nights With Apple Delights
< < Back toEvery year, when the leaves begin to change color and the air becomes cool and crisp, folks from miles away travel to Jackson, where they have the opportunity to smell, taste and drink everything "apple."
With the theme "Light Up the Night with Apple Delights," this year’s Jackson County Apple Festival is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 through Saturday, Sept. 20, featuring great activities, attractions and entertainment for the whole family.
The theme contest winners were Emily Preston of Billina Donaldson’s Multi-handicap Unit. This year's Jackson Apple Festival Grand Marshals are Curt and Judy Wiggins.
The following highlights are just a sample of what the festival has to offer:
The festival kicks off Tuesday, with festivities opening to the public at noon. At 2 p.m. the annual apple-peeling contest will start. Opening ceremonies, along with the official ribbon cutting ceremony, are scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Hozer’s Pizza Stage. Also at 4 p.m., there will be the crowning of the 2014 Apple Festival Queen and Court by Grand Marshals Curt and Judy Wiggins.
All rides will open 5 p.m. and remain open until 10 p.m. Tuesday night’s entertainment includes Crossroad Station on Hozer’s Pizza Stage at 6 p.m., Smoke & Mirrors on the Wesbanco/Coll Auto stage at 7 p.m., and the popular Lip Sync Contest on Hozer’s Pizza Stage at 8:15 p.m.
Wednesday is sure to draw a crowd with a full schedule and "all the rides you can ride" at a special price. Another fun activity for children to check out will be the Columbus Zoo's presentation with animals at 11 a.m. on the Hozer’s Pizza stage. The Little Miss Queen contest is set for 12 p.m., the school parade is at 1 p.m., and the opening parade will begin at 7:45 p.m.

Also on Wednesday, be sure to check out the main stage for the Blizzard eating contest, the boyfriend/girlfriend game and the Minute to Win It contest, just to name a few. The evening’s entertainment begins at 6 p.m., including Kat and the Road Dawgs, Jason “Pudge” Gillum and the Apple Festival's Got Talent Contest.
Thursday, the Jackson County Apple Festival will start early with a pre-school parade and stuffed animal competition at 10 a.m. Parents of little ones may also be interested in the baby stroller races and baby-crawling contest. Both contests have a $1 entry fee.
Live music begins at 7:30 p.m. with Ben Davis Jr., followed by Ronnie Love and the Sounds of the Drifters at 8:30 p.m.
On Friday evening, Nashville Artist Joe Diffie will perform at 9 p.m. on the Hozer’s Pizza stage. Down the street at the Wesbanco/Coll Auto stage, The JJ & Goodtime Bluegrass band will be performing.
The festival wraps up Saturday, Sept. 20 with a full day of events, including a 5K Run, Pretty Baby Contest, Annual Apple Festival Car Show at Manpower Park and the Grand Finale Parade, which features over 175 units, a band competition and float judging.
Throughout the festival, be sure to check out the Jackson Apple Festival Royalty displays. The Queens window display is located in the window of Andrea’s Bridal. The Little Miss Queens display is located at Ohio Valley Bank. The past court members display is located at Jackson Fabric and Sewing Center. The past queen display is located at the Farm Bureau.
Also, be sure to visit the quilt show at the Jackson Public Library, the craft show at the Memorial Building, the Festival Art Show at the Markay Cultural Center and the numerous festival booths and exhibits.
