The Vinton County Vikings (3-1, 2-1 TVC-Ohio) entered the week knowing that they had a tough conference schedule ahead of them. Even after overcoming a solid Alexander Spartan squad early in the week, the Vikings needed to stand toe-to-toe against an experienced Athens Bulldogs team on Friday. The result was a .500 week in which Vinton County defeated Alexander 54-48, but fell to Athens 63-48.

On Tuesday, Jordan Albright led the Vikings to a 33-26 first half lead with 14 points in the half. He finished tied for the game-high total of 18 points with Alexander’s Seth Richardson. The Spartans pulled the game even at 42-42 early in the third, but Vinton County’s Derek Jones hit a three to put Vinton County up for the remainder of the game. He and Albright combined for 18 points from behind the arc, and all of Jones’ six points were 3-point field goals.

Jones proved to be huge for the Vikings against Athens, putting up 16 points on five 3-pointers. He was a common find all night for Albright, who finished with 15 points himself.

The lack of frontcourt production hurt them though, as starting forwards Max Ward and Chase Wood combined for only eight points on the night. They did not have an answer for Athens’ Joe Burrow, who dominated with 22 points and five rebounds, or Adam Luerhman, especially during a 14-0 run that sealed the game in the fourth quarter.

Vinton County currently sits tied for third in the TVC-Ohio behind undefeated Athens and the River Valley Raiders. They have a week off before traveling to Jackson on Saturday, Dec. 27.
