The Rural Action Zero Waste Program in collaboration with the City of Athens Environment and sustainability Commission organized a community conversation at the Athens Public Library Tuesday about the possible challenges and solutions of reducing and recycling plastic bags.
The community conversation is one of a series of community conversations organized by The Rural Action.
According to Ohio’s Environmental Protection Agency, every pound of recycled plastic used reduces energy use in plastic production by 84% and greenhouse gas emission by 71%.
“It is important to remember that the plastic bags are something that only been around for the past 40 years,” said Athens City Council member Jennifer Cochran.
The meeting included figures, statistics, and models about the environmental benefits of reducing and recycling plastic bags and presented a number of the different solutions.
