Ecoustic Alchemy: Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” (AUDIO)

< < Back to

It’s June in small town America and that means planting season is in full swing. Children gather stones and the townsfolk assemble for an annual event – the lottery.

As the old timers say, “lottery in June, corn will grow soon.” But when they draw names to determine the winner, we find it’s not the type of lottery one wants to win.

Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery, first published in The New Yorker magazine in 1948, is one of the most famous short stories in the history of American literature.

Listen to Ecoustic Alchemy bring life to this classic, once described as “a chilling tale of conformity gone mad.”

Co-produced by WOUB Public Media and the School of Media Arts and Studies at Ohio University, The Lottery features several well-known Athens-area actors and was engineered by OU MDIA students.

This audiobook uses the unabridged version of this story taken from the Project Gutenberg site. You can view or download the text here.
