Sheridan Hands Maysville First Loss in Thriller
< < Back to sheridan-hands-maysville-first-loss-in-thrillerMost expected it to be close, but few came in thinking that the score would be in Sheridan’s favor at the final whistle. In a game where both teams were fighting not just their opponent but the wind and rain the Sheridan Generals were able to pick up the 14-6 win in a defensive struggle.
With Sheridan clinging to a 7-6 lead late in the fourth, it looked like Maysville quarterback Tanner Ashcraft had built some momentum after picking up 16 yards to bring the ball from their own 26 to the 42. But on the very next play, the Generals were able to force a Chase Himmelspach fumble and recover on that 42 yard line.
With the game still close and the Generals facing a 4th and 12, quarterback Dylan Dupler was able to find running back Deryk Gross who broke a tackle and cut across the middle for a 23 yard gain down to the one yard line. On the very next play, Dupler was able to find the end zone on a one yard run giving Sheridan the 14-6 edge that would stand as the final score.
For Sheridan, its defensive presence was key in keeping the game close, as it was able to shut down Maysville’s run game, including Chase Roberts who was unable to get anything going all night.
Both teams struggled all night with penalties as they played a huge factor in ending drives. And with the rain playing a big factor, the passing game was a non-factor with both quarterback’s completing two passes, cumulatively.
The Generals are now in a tie for first place in the MVL with a 4-0 record in conference and a 4-2 record overall while Maysville fell to 3-1 in conference and 5-1 overall. Next week, Maysville will look to right the ship against Morgan while Sheridan will look to keep their conference record perfect against Philo.
