Five Injured In US 33 Crash In Athens County
< < Back to five-injured-in-us-33-crash-in-athens-countyAthens – Five people were taken to the hospital after a crash that shut down US 33 for hours on Sunday.
Keith Durst, 42, of Gallipolis Ferry, W. Va. was driving eastbound on US 33 west of state Route 78 in Athens County at about 5:30 p.m., according to a release by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Athens Post. Durst’s 2014 Hyundai Elantra went off the right side of the road, striking a Chevrolet Suburban which was disabled and on the side of the road.
After the Suburban was hit, it collided with three other vehicles, according to highway patrol reports. The five vehicles caused the need for eastbound lanes to be closed on the road.
Durst was transported to Grant Medical Center for “non-life threatening injuries,” the release stated. Four others were taken to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital in Athens with minor injuries.
Traffic was diverted through Nelsonville until the road re-opened three hours later.
“The patrol reminds drivers to change lanes for disabled motorists and public safety vehicles when possible if not possible drivers should slow down and proceed with caution,” the release stated.
The crash remains under investigation.
