Ohio City Wants Upfront Payments From Presidential Campaigns

CANTON, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio city says presidential candidates are welcome to bring their campaign slogans to town as long as they bring their checkbooks too.
North Canton in northeastern Ohio is asking candidates to pay for any costs associated with visits up front, including the price of city safety forces.
The city is sitting on unpaid bills of more than $11,000 for two visits by the Mitt Romney campaign in 2012. North Canton paid overtime wages for police, fire and street services.
North Canton Mayor David Held, a Republican, told the Canton Repository for a story Tuesday that the costs of campaign visits should not be subsidized by local taxpayers.
He says communities often have little notice, about 72 hours, before a candidate’s visit.
