The 2018 WOUB Golf Benefit only took place for a little over a half hour on Friday, July 20, as mid-morning thunderstorms and heavy rains got in the way of the 12 teams who took part in the tournament at the Athens Country Club.

However, the teams still enjoyed camaraderie, raffle prizes, as well as breakfast and lunch.

Although the weather did chase all the golfers off of the course, Greg Moore of the Athens Country Club did give every player a raincheck for 18 holes at whatever later date they choose.

All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the services provided by WOUB Public Media and the operations of the station.

“I haven’t golfed in about 12 years, so really I’ll just be there to help everyone else look better,” said Christopher Riddle, WOUB’s Morning Edition radio host who was also a member of WOUB’s team, several days before the tournament. “That said, my short game is still on point.”

This year WOUB had a number of sponsors for the second edition of the event, which debuted in 2017.

“Great Lakes Brewing Co. is committed to brewing good through service and giving, everywhere our beer is sold. As a brewery that values education, storytelling, and community building, we’re proud to support WOUB for their excellent content and community-focused programming,” said Scott Hedrick of Great Lakes Brewing, the lunch sponsor for the event. “Public media informs, enlightens, and entertains us in an accessible, unbiased way. Public media shines a light on voices, stories, and issues that help us to understand our world.”

Other hole sponsors Jackie O’s, White’s Mill, State Electric, Classic Brands, Little Fish Brewery, Larry’s Dog house, Brenen’s Coffee Cafe, Devil’s Kettle Brewing, Hoon Inc. Design Builders, Eclipse Company Story, Porter Financial Services, Shawna Stump State Farm, and O’Nail Hartman Insurance.

Cameron Fuller, the owner and brewer at Devil’s Kettle, said that he had a personal investment in supporting this benefit for WOUB.

“I personally listen to WOUB all of the time,” he said. “We really value sponsorship opportunities that allow us to make personal connections with prospective customers, so a hole sponsorship for this event was a great opportunity to do that.”
