Deputies from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to 7320 Radford Road on report of an open door at the residence, according to Sheriff Rodney Smith.
While responding to the call, deputies found a “strange device,” Smith said. Investigators contacted the Franklin County bomb squad and obtained a search warrant for the residence. The bomb squad responded Thursday morning.
“They found bomb-making materials…and a pipe bomb in the residence,” Smith said.
The pipe bomb was determined to be live, so the bomb squad detonated it in a safe location, according to Smith.
Investigators say the home is vacant.
Smith said there is no danger to the public, and all bomb-making materials were confiscated. The investigation is ongoing, with the assistance of the bomb squad and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
