Athens is chock full of aesthetically stunning historic buildings and landmarks. The annual Gingerbread House Display and Competition that has been spotlighting some of these places since 2013 will return to the Southeast Ohio History Center on November 13 after a year’s hiatus in 2017.

“What we really want to do is draw (bakers) not just from Athens, but involve bakers from all over — Jackson, Miegs, Hocking,” said Jessica Cyders, the curator and assistant director of the Southeast Ohio History Center.

The entry deadline for the competition and display is Thursday, November 1, and the entry form, as well as a detailed list of rules, is available on the Southeast Ohio History Center’s website at this link. The sweet constructions are due to the Southeast Ohio History Center on Tuesday, November 13. The entry fee for the competition is $35, and there are separate categories for professional and non-professional bakers; children and groups of children; teens; and groups of adults. The grand prize for both the professional and non-professional categories is $500. There is a $200 first prize for every category, as well.

“I think the (Gingerbread House Display and Competition) gets people interested in history in a different way,” said Cyders. “We have a lot of people in the community who like being creative with something that is as unusual as a gingerbread house, and we like to encourage them to look around at historical buildings and sites to get them interested in them in a way that isn’t just reading about them out of a book.”
