Waterford Gets the Win in a Defensive Game Against Miller
< < Back to waterford-gets-the-win-in-a-defensive-game-against-millerA slow start between Waterford and Miller had both teams desperately looking for a lead. But, the Lady Wildcats got it together as they started to capitalize on the Lady Falcons’ offensive errors.
The Lady Wildcats won with a low scoring outcome of 33-24. A defensively based game was the cause for the low outcome with both teams keeping their zones in check.
Waterford was left without their team leader Rachael Adams for the second straight game. Adams was injured during their first game at Trimble, but is expected to return in two to three weeks.
Waterford had an uncharacteristically slow start in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats started off extremely cold as nothing fell for them until late into the quarter. But, they quickly got into gear after they took over defensively. They ended the game with 13 steals.
Cara Taylor led the team with four steals which is what helped Waterford establish a foundation against Miller. “We have to find a way to keep that up for four quarters instead of four minutes,” said Waterford head coach Jerry Close.
Miller and Waterford kept it tied at the end of the first quarter at 8-8. The Lady Wildcats started to heat up as they scored ten points in the second quarter, while Miller added three to the board. Emily Kern helped Waterford keep adding to their lead as she led the team in scoring with six points.
The third quarter had a slower tempo throughout. Both teams scored single digits in this quarter. Waterford scored three points, while Miller only scored two points. The Lady Wildcats didn’t hit a single field goal this quarter.
Their points only came from three foul shots. Miller stepped up defensively this quarter to deny many shot attempts and step in the lanes. “Miller is a much-improved team, give them a lot of credit for what happened out there,” said Coach Close.
The game was a roller coaster as both teams jumped back onto their hot streaks again in the fourth quarter. Waterford with twelve points, and Miller with eight. Waterford hit their one and only three-pointer this quarter from Lily Roberts.
Waterford has two important games coming up next week against South Gallia on Monday, December 10th and Federal Hocking on Thursday, December 13th.
