The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes went on a six point run, and from there the Athens Lady Bulldogs’ fate was sealed with a final score of 63-44.
After falling into their groove, Nelsonville-York penetrated the lane, and scored a majority of their points in the paint, in fact, 46 of their points came from within the Lady Bulldog defense.
The Nelsonville sister duo made some big noise for the Lady Buckeyes as Haley Hurd scored 21 points, leading all scorers, while also grabbing 13 off the glass. Mack Hurd followed along with 14 points and grabbing five steals.
But it wasn’t easy from the tip. The Lady Bulldogs held their own only trailing by six throughout the first half. Laura Manderick led Athens with 18 points, but these points meant a lot more. Manderick is now Athens’ fourth all time leading scorer, and still has the rest of the season to continue up the ranks.
The squad looks to get back in the win column as they travel to Alexander to take on the Spartans on Thursday. With the season coming to a close, the team is looking to wrap up with as many wins as possible.
For many the game of basketball is heavily influenced by the big name stars, specifically the name Kobe Bryant. Nelsonville head coach Bobby Cassady had some words to say on the way Kobe has influenced his passion for basketball
“I have always considered Kobe number two, of course next Michael Jordan,” Cassady said.
“Kobe is basketball.”
