< < Back to lady-lancers-build-early-lead-defeat-lynchburg-clayEASTERN VALLEY, Ohio- The Federal Hocking Lancers and the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs faced off in the first round of the Division III playoffs. Both teams fought from beginning to end with hopes to continue their season, but the Lady Lancers managed to win this one, 52-47.
The player of the night was Paige Tolson who contributed a total of 16 points and a steal. Free throws were the key to Tolson’s stellar night, making 8 of her 10 attempts. To add to her stellar offense, she put on a destructive defensive game.
The Lady Lancers overall had quite a night, they managed to play their strongest in the beginning and end of this game.
The first quarter was definitely a key aspect as to why the Lady Lancers came away with a win. They were dominant offensively and defensively. They led with a score of 20-9.
The second quarter is when the Lady Mustangs started to pick up some momentum. Offensively, they were making smart plays which allowed them to pick up some points after being down by 11 points in the first quarter. The second quarter had ended with a score of 19-25 with most of the Lady Lancers’ points coming from free-throws.
During halftime, the Lancers seemed to change something and managed to end the third quarter with a score of 40-32. They seemed to do a much better job of passing the ball and creating a suffocating defensive environment.
It was an intense battle in the fourth quarter between these two teams. The Lady Lancers seemed to have gone in with hopes to continue the same game plan to end the game, but the Lady Mustangs weren’t going to let them win without a fight. They continuously were making smart plays and playing their best game of the night.
At one point the difference was only two points, but the pressure seemed to get to the Lady Mustangs as they continuously fouled the Lady Lancers. To add to their fouling troubles the Lady Mustangs seemed to have a hard time getting the ball to their side of the court, which was another adding factor to the Lady Lancers’ coming out on top.
The Lady Lancers will face the number one seed, Eastern Brown at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Valley High School.
