Athens wins first game of the season in shutout fashion
< < Back to athens-wins-first-game-of-the-season-in-shutout-fashionTHE PLAINS, Ohio (WOUB) — This was a huge matchup between two major rivals. The rivalry started heating up in 2019 when Athens and Wellson shared the TVC-Ohio title. And this year both teams are stuck at the bottom of the division.
This match was expected to be a dog fight. But this battle ended up one-sided with Athens blowing out Wellston with 7 touchdowns. Athens scored 46 unanswered points to give the final total 46-0.
It all started with the Bulldogs scoring early with Marcus Stevers taking it to the house for a touchdown. Then later on in the quarter Braeden Young kept the ball himself for his own six points. This wouldn’t stop Athens momentum because Athens would recover the onside kick
and later on in the drive Marcus Stevers would make a spectacular catch to extend the bulldogs lead 20-0.
Early at the start of the second quarter Braeden Young would steamrole his way right into the endzone to give himself another six points on the board. Later on in the quarter Luke Brandes took it to the house for another touchdown. Next Marcus Stevers left Wellston in the dust for another 6 on the board.
The only thing Athens struggled with was bad snaps. But that didn’t stop them because Young scooped up a fumbled ball and took it to the house. To extend their lead 46-0.
Wellston had their first first down late in the second quarter and then stopped on a fourth down conversion. The Golden Rockets also had a spectacular catch that could have been considered an interception but was ruled out of bounds.
Athens goes on to face River Valley next week for their final home game of the season. They will be looking to carry on their momentum into this match to extend their record to 2-7. Even though the Bulldogs are starting to make a comeback in their season, they still have no chances of clinching a playoff spot. Athens has some amazing young talent and it should be interesting to see how they grow as a team. Even though they don’t have a shot at the division title or a
shot at a playoff spot. Don’t be surprised to see them at the top of the division next season.
