The Vikings came out of the gates rolling with a 8-3 run. The Pioneers were quick to respond, though, as Landen Jarrell scored seven unanswered points to give Zane Trace a 10-8 lead halfway through the first quarter.
Vinton County did not let this lead last very long. They retook the lead at 12-10, and Zane Trace never regained the lead for the remainder of the game. The first quarter ended with the Vikings leading by a score of 18-13.
The second quarter showed more of the same offensively. Both teams implemented a full-court press defense, which seemed to work more in favor of the Vikings. The Pioneers had trouble keeping the ball in the second quarter, but the lead stayed at just five points at the half, where Vinton County led 34-29.
Ashton Allman and Garrett Brown essentially took all of the life out of the Pioneers’ defense, as the two went back-and-forth scoring for the Vikings. Brown scored nine points in the third quarter, which extended Vinton County’s lead to 51-43.
Brown opened up the fourth quarter by scoring seven points on one possession, with four technical free throws and a wide open corner three.
The Pioneers responded by going on a 7-0 run of their own, cutting the lead to just five points and forcing the Vikings to burn a timeout.
Following this timeout, Vinton County ran away and did not look back. The Vikings relied on players such as Brown, Allman and Cobra Sharp to put the icing on the cake, as Vinton County would go on to win by a score of 73-60.
The Pioneers fell to 0-2 and will look to bounce back on Saturday when they play host to the Unioto Shermans (1-0). Meanwhile, the Vikings improved to 2-0 and will play the Meigs Marauders in McArthur this Friday.
