NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District approved a motion Wednesday to move forward with a $24 annual parcel fee for property owners.

The fee would fund the purchase of the Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers and other improvements in the district.

It would tax all improved parcels in Athens and Hocking counties. Improved parcels are those with a structure on them.

Solid Waste District Director Jane Forrest Redfern said she also submitted a grant application for over $2.7 million.

The money would buy the recycling center for $1 million, build a large center for hard-to-recycle materials on-site, and extend its composting facility.

“There’s certainly a want for beautiful compost for people’s yards and gardens,” Redfern said.

If the district gets the grant, the annual parcel fees will lower to $20.

The district will hold public hearings on the fees in Athens on June 25, Nelsonville on July 2 and Logan on July 11.

A final vote on the fees will take place the week of July 15.
