NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — Nelsonville City Council is looking for a new vice president after an early resignation.

Nancy Sonick told WOUB last month that she would resign in November. However, her resignation became effective Monday.

Sonick was a key piece in solving the cities upcoming “December problem.” All other councilmembers terms end on Nov. 30, and the new form of government will take effect on Jan. 1. If Sonick were to remain on council, she could then appoint another person to a seat on council, then those two could appoint another, all the way until the council was full.

There are one-month terms on the November ballot. However, no one has filed to run for them.

Without a council member, the city can not conduct business until the new council is sworn in.

Sonick recently filed a petition for the position of mayor for the new statutory government. It is unclear whether Sonick will still run.

Current councilmember Cameron Peck claims Sonick was bullied out of office.

“I believe that she was bullied out of office by former Nelsonville city employees,” Peck said. “Namely Greg Smith and those who work with him.”

Smith denies these claims made against him.

“I’ll flat out deny that anybody I know of or any of my friends ever bullied Nancy,” Smith said.

There was another resignation of a Nelsonville city official. Treasurer Michael Milane’s resignation became effective Tuesday.

The city is seeking applications for the position of Treasurer, Auditor and city council. Current Nelsonville Auditor Taylor Sappington is stepping away in September to become the county treasurer.

Nelsonville City Council is set to hold a special meeting Thursday to elect a new Vice President of City Council.

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated Taylor Sappington is stepping away to become the county auditor.
