Shaw brings home four Emmys®; joins WOUB Public Media staff full-time
Evan Shaw, WOUB’s chief editor/videographer/producer, brought home four Emmy® awards Saturday night during the Ohio Valley Regional Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ annual event in Cincinnati.
Winning four Emmys® of out five nominations, along with interns Chris Sabo and Sean Fisher, they took home wins for composite rolls, “The Scotty Hasting Story” and “Relentless: An Inside Look at Ohio Football.”
“Relentless,” a joint venture between Ohio University Athletics and WOUB, was a six-part series featuring players on and off the field during training camp for Ohio University Football.
The statues double Shaw’s Emmy® wins bringing the career total to eight. He’s been nominated 12 times.
Shaw joined WOUB Public Media staff full-time July 1 after several years as director of multimedia marketing with Ohio University Athletics.
A 2007 graduate of Ohio University, Shaw worked with WOUB as a part of the hands-on training program WOUB offers to OU students. He says he’s excited about the opportunity to work with students who were once in the position he was in.
“I’m excited at the prospect of working more with students. I’ll be mentoring and overseeing training and camera workshops for students working with both “Gridiron Glory” and The “Bobcat Sports Showcase” (WOUB’s student-produced sports programs).”
WOUB Director and General Manager Tom Hodson is thrilled to have Shaw return.
“Evan returns to us at WOUB – not as the student who graduated but now as the consummate award-winning professional,” said Hodson. “He will be a great asset to our local productions and he also will be able to mentor a whole new generation of eager students. We couldn’t be more pleased to have him with us.”
Mark Brewer, chief content officer, echoed Hodson’s sentiments.
“It’s nice when a former student goes into the field and becomes successful and returns to give back to students,” said Brewer. “They understand this program. They understand what we do and it makes it a really special mentoring relationship.”
Although Shaw will still be involved with sports shows, he will also have the opportunity to work on other productions, including a documentary with the School of Media Arts and Studies focusing on Art Therapy and a new WOUB series that will feature the history and unique qualities of towns within the region.
He’s looking forward to a different challenge.
“It’s [returning to WOUB] really an opportunity for me to do things on a different level – a new level that I’m not as comfortable with,” said Shaw. “I think it will make a different impact on the community than what I’ve done in the past.”
He says part of the excitement with the Emmy® nominations this year were his interns’ involvement in the program. “I really wanted to win for them – they were great. They worked long hours and this would be a reward for all they’re hard work,” Shaw said.
He says the Emmy® award banquet is always an exiting time – mainly because there are always a considerable number WOUB alumni that have been nominated. “It really speaks for the power of the WOUB program and how much students learn while they’re here.”
WOUB students picked up a student production award for “Gridiron Glory” for the second year in a row, the fifth overall award. The show will begin its 15th season in August.
WOUB student Rachel Thompson was awarded the David J. Clarke Memorial Scholarship. The award offers a $3,000 scholarship to a student who has achieved academic excellence; who is involved in co-curricular television activities (through student media, internships, or related employment); who possesses a desire to engage in television as a career and who has high integrity and personal character.
Several WOUB productions were given honorable mention in the student categories including: “Newswatch,” “The Bobcat Sports Showcase” and “The Goose Girl,” a feature piece from a webcast from Ohio University’s Research and Creative Expo.
