Ohio Valley Summer Theater (OVST) is offering its eighth year of Youth Theater Camp June 1-19 at ARTS/West in Athens. The camp, open to students in rising grades 2-12, offers tracks in stage performance and theater technology in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

The camp ends with performances by the participants on June 19. The performances are free and open to the public.

“The Youth Camp has become an important part of OVST’s outreach to the community,” says camp Director and OVST Artistic Director Carol Patterson. “The team building and leadership development witnessed year after year speaks to OVST’s mission to provide sustainable, educational, independent community theater and high quality and diverse theatrical experiences for both participants and audiences.”

Camp for rising grades 2-6 is held from 9-11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Camp participants will gain theatrical knowledge about auditions, play writing, improvisation, musical theater and movement. Camp for this age group is directed by Bonnie Hall.

Camp for rising grades 7-12 is held from 12-3:00 p.m. and will focus on Commedia delle’arte, an unwritten or improvised form of theater. Camp participants will focus on broad physical performance including slapstick, combat training and specific character work in voice and movement through improvisation. Camp for this age group is directed by Carol Patterson with the assistance of Dayton Willison.

Technical theater training also is available for afternoon camp participants and is led by Athens native, camp alumna and Ohio University sophomore theater production student Maile Orr. This track provides students with training in the technical aspects of theater such as sound and lighting.

OVST Youth Theater Camp Musical Director and local musician Michael Tobar joins the camp for his fifth year.
