He’s asked a judge to order the immediate return of the animals to his sanctuary near Toledo.
Kenny Hetrick says the state isn’t properly caring for the animals and they’ve developed health problems.
Two state veterinarians dispute those claims. They say the animals aren’t in any danger and that a few minor injuries have been treated since the animals were seized in January.
The Blade newspaper in Toledo reports that the state says the animals can’t be returned to Hetrick now because he doesn’t have a permit to keep them.
Ohio’s agriculture department removed the animals after denying him a permit.
