The Columbus Dispatch reports that Athens Police arrested 28 people Saturday night. University police arrested 43 people on 47 charges, including two felony arrests for cocaine possession and marijuana trafficking. Athens County emergency personnel went on 43 runs, 38 of which were related to the block party.
Athens’ deputy service safety director Ron Lucas, told the newspaper the city shut down five parties in the off-campus area.
Athens spends $50,000 to $65,000 to pay for extra police patrols during the celebration. The university budgets $100,000 every year for the party and pays overtime to its own officers and others.
