Waste District Committee Rejects Feasibility Study
< < Back to ?p=1988The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District policy committee last night rejected the recommendation a feasibility study be included in their management plan.
The Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative members suggested the committee include the study as a way to protect the best interests of affect communities.
The public comment was part of a hearing on a draft plan for the district to meet EPA guidelines.
The plan would have charged a $3 per ton generation fee for waste.
Zero Waste Initiative Coordinator Kyle O'Keefe says he had hoped the study would act as a compromise.
"Currently there's a lot of opposition out there about passing the plan with certain constituents in the district and we had been able to make some common ground with those parties that were in opposition because of this study that was going to be put into the plan. Now that it's not put into the plan, those members are still opposed to the plan and we're going to try to figure out a way of the district potentially adopting this study," said O'Keefe.
The district has until March 14th to pass the new plan to meet EPA guidelines.
