Week In Review: Meigs Marauders’ Struggles Continue

The past few weeks have not been too kind to Meigs for both the boys and girls basketball teams.
It was a light week for the boys team this week, with only one game against Fisher Catholic. It was a tight defensive matchup, but in the end the Marauders lost a nail-biter 42-39.
After another loss, the team has a lot to figure out moving forward this season. “We are a team that is still looking for its identity and leader,” said Meigs boys basketball coach Jeremy Hill. “A leaderless ball club has minimal success and little to no success without an identity.”
For the Lady Marauders, it was an action-packed, but also disappointing week.
They first went to play in the Rio Classic and took in Tug Valley, a team from West Virginia. Mallory Hawley dominated the offense, scoring 29 points. The only issue was that the others only two other Marauders scored with a total of 7 points.
This was a game to forget as Meigs lost in blowout fashion 72-36.
The squad set out to start the week out right on Monday as they look to bounce back against Belpre on their home floor.
Hawley once again led the team in scoring and is a constant bright spot for the team. The game was close until the second half when Meigs got into foul trouble.
They gave up 29 free throw attempts to Belpre, and they couldn’t come back from their self-inflicted wounds as the Marauders fell 52-44. A dissatisfying result, but light years better than their previous 36 point defeat.
On Thursday the Lady Marauders traveled to Pomeroy to face Warren. They were down by three at the end of the first quarter, which was the main positive take away from this one.
Warren outscored Meigs 22-6 in the second quarter, and kept their foot on the gas pedal to start the second half.
“We struggled getting any scoring going,” said Meigs girls coach Heath Hudson. “We came out in the second half having trouble adjusting to the pressure of their press, got into foul trouble, and then Molly Grayson caught on fire and there was nothing we could do to stop her.
Grayson scored 27 points for Warren, as they routed Meigs 75-30, giving the Marauders another tough pill to swallow.
Their final game of the week took place Saturday on the road against Gallia Academy.
Meigs played an impressive game, amassing a twenty-two point lead at the end of three quarters. After a week of losing in the fashion in which they lost, one felt like this could be a much-needed victory to propel the Marauders forward, but fate had other ideas.
Gallia Academy dominated the fourth quarter and stormed all the way back to take a three point lead. Mallory Hawley lead the team in scoring once again, but Riley Lisle became the hero when she knocked down a three pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Foul trouble became a huge factor once again, as four Marauders fouled out. Gallia Academy pounced on the lack of depth and pulled away from Meigs, taking the game 57-50.
It was a week of heartbreak in a plethora of ways, and coach Hudson has to pick up the pieces and get his team back on track.
“We have to realize that in everything in life there are highs and lows, and most of the time the journey to to the highs are always a long hard struggle. But once you get there you enjoy it more.”
The Meigs boys basketball team will face Jackson this upcoming Tuesday, and the Lady Marauders will take on Wellston on Monday.
