The Trimble Lady Tomcats claw their way to a win against Berne Union Rockets
< < Back to ?p=276796GLOUSTER, Ohio (WOUB) — The Trimble Lady Tomcats got back to their winning ways after being handed their first loss of the season on Saturday by winning a thriller by a score 46-43 in overtime at Berne Union on Wednesday.
The Tomcats got off to a great start jumping out to an early 8-0 lead, that would be the largest lead either team would hold all night after the ensuing 10-2 run from Berne Union would tie the score at ten by the end of the opening quarter.
The low scoring affair would continue in the second quarter. The two teams would score a combined 15 points in the period, which was capped off by a three-point buzzer-beater from Sophia Kline to give the Golden Rockets a 19-16 lead at halftime.
Kline was the driving force for Berne Union offensively finishing her night with an impressive 32 points, shooting 13-22 from the field and 3-3 beyond the arc.
Play was halted momentarily in the third quarter after Trimble’s Emily Young put in a floater from inside the paint for her 1,000th career point. Head coach Joe Richards was beaming with pride for the senior after such an important career milestone. “
It’s pretty awesome”, said Richards. “She’s played every game, and she’s started every game of her high school career. That’s a credit to her durability and that’s a big accomplishment.” Young would finish her special night with 12 points.
After trading blows throughout the second half, with the score tied at 39, the Golden Rockets came out of a timeout and held the ball for the final 39 seconds of regulation. A would be game-winning layup from Sophia Kline rattled of the rim to force the extra period.
Berne Union would win the tip and draw first blood in overtime with a three-pointer from Lauren Groves, but the Tomcats’ Jaylee Orsborne answered on the very next possession with a three of her own to tie the game at 42. After forcing a turnover with 1:42 remaining, the Tomcats came
out of a timeout to run a perfectly executed set which finished with a Jayne Six layup to give Trimble a two-point lead. After another stop on defense, the Tomcats were able to run out most of the remaining clock, and Emily Young sunk two free throws to effectively put the game on ice.
