Excursions – Jazz Motifs with Dr. Art Cromwell presents a Juneteenth special: Greg Tate Conductions: Origin Stories – 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. ET
From Dr. Art Cromwell:
During the lockdown (Aug. 2020) I had an opportunity to speak with Greg Tate, a friend and colleague from my Washington D.C. days in radio. Originally, I met Greg when he was a perspicacious high school student, with whom I later shared hosting responsibilities at several concerts and on air.
While his growth a development in New York has been widely acknowledged, the origins of his audacious musical paradigm crunching evolved from family, friends and mentors in D.C. This portion of his journey unfolds in our conversation presented as our Juneteenth Special on Excursions, Saturday, June 15, as part of Radio Free Athens 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on WOUB.
The Pulitzer Board has awarded Tate a special citation: “A special citation for the late writer and critic Greg Tate, whose language – cribbed from literature, academia, popular culture and hip-hop – was as influential as the content of his ideas. His aesthetic, innovations and intellectual originality, particularly in his pioneering hip-hop criticism, continue to influence subsequent generations, especially writers and critics of color.”
