Ohio Receives $26M For Summer Youth Employment Programs

Young people looking around Southeast Ohio for a job this summer may be able to find one at their local Department of Job and Family Services office.
Ohio has received $26 million in federal funding for youth employment programs.
Athens County's allocation is $275,000.
All the other counties in the region have been awarded funding, too, including Lawrence County – $256,000 – and Muskingum, $281,000.
The programs are for 14 to 24-year-olds from low-income families.
According to a release from the Department of Job and Family Services, "wage subsidies will help local businesses hire young people into jobs that might not otherwise exist."
Department Director Michael Colbert says "the unemployment rate for teenagers hovers around 23 percent."
He says teens "need jobs not just for the cash, but for the work experience", so they can get permanent jobs.
