Wellston Golden Rockets Preview
< < Back to wellston-golden-rockets-previewThe Wellston Golden Rockets look to make the 2011-2012 season the turning point for their program. Wellston held a 4-6 record last year while winning only two games in the Ohio Division of the Tri-Valley Conference. The road to redemption won’t be any easier for the Golden Rockets, who haven’t enjoyed a winning season since 2006.
They key games on Wellston’s schedule include TVC-Ohio matchups against the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes on Sept. 30, The Alexander Spartans on Oct. 7 and The Athens Bulldogs on Oct. 21. The Golden Rockets have not beaten the Nelsonville-York in over seven seasons. A win against the Buckeyes in 2011 would surely give the program a momentum boost within the conference. Wellston head coach Chris Hutchinson has a number of returning players on the roster including senior quarterback Jaylen Prater. The experienced gained from last year’s dismal season can only help this team on the field.
Realistically, Wellston has the ability to have a successful season if they can make a few more plays in tight games. The Golden Rockets only suffered two blowout losses and lost three other games by seven points or less. Wellston plays the identical schedule from a year ago leading to familiarity with the opponents. This will come in handy against the non-conference matchups. Wellston opens up the season on Saturday Aug. 8 on the road against Jackson High School. The Golden Rockets won last year’s meeting between these two teams 33-13. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
