Belpre Runs Past Lady Lancers

Led by Freshman Katelyn Hughes and Sophomore Sierra Barker, the Belpre Lady Eagles topped Federal Hocking for the second time this year, beating the Lady Lancers 67-53.

Barker and Hughes led the way for the home squad, both knocking in 19 points. Junior Lexus Cunningham had an impressive performance as well, netting nine points and snagging eight rebounds.

As for the road team, Cheyenne Singer almost finished with a double-double, dropping 25 points and grabbing nine boards. Sophomore Carley Tabler also chipped in with 10 points and six assists.

Unfortunately for the Lady Lancers, it was a tale of two halves. Fed Hock led 31-29 after two quarters, forcing nine Belpre turnovers and playing with a high sense of urgency.

In the second half, the Lady Lancers only forced two turnovers and were outhustled by a hard-working Belpre team.

The back-to-back steals and lay-ups by Sierra Baker and Katelyn Hughes in the third quarter proved to be the turning point of the game, but the Lady Lancers didn’t help themselves with their poor shooting.

‘The guards need to start hitting their shots, but they will,” McKibben said. The head coach noted that the team couldn’t completely depend on Singer’s interior play to run an efficient offense.

The loss keeps the Lady Lancers in sixth place in the TVC-Hocking, moving them to 5-11 on he season and 5-9 in conference play. Fed Hock will look to snap their five-game losing streak against last place at Miller on Thursday.

For the Lady Eagles, tonight’s victory moves them to 12-6 on the year and 7-6 in the Hocking going into Thursday’s matchup against Trimble.
