Athens Thumps Rival Alexander
< < Back to athens-thumps-rival-alexanderThe Alexander Spartans lost more than a game when they fell 40-7 to the Athens Bulldogs Friday night at Basil Rutter Field.
Losing in back to back weeks, in addition to seeing quarterback Trey Bennett go down with an injury, brought the Spartans’ dream season to a screeching halt and were essentially eliminated from winning TVC-Ohio title.
Athens was paced, as they have been all season, by running back DeVon Sharp. His three touchdowns in the first half were all the Bulldogs would need, and he improved his chances at winning Player of the Year honors by gaining 126 yards on the ground. Sharp finished with 226 total yards between rushing, receiving and passing.
After Bennett went down midway through the first, Gage Miller took over under center where he struggled to fill the void throwing three interceptions to the hungry Bulldog defense. He and the rest of the Spartans struggled to get anything going on offense all night, gaining just one total yard in the first half.
Athens will continue on their road to a TVC-Ohio crown when they play Wellston next week. Alexander’s schedule won't get any easier when they face off against the undefeated Nelsonville-York Buckeyes.
