New rules for street vendors in the city of Athens will go into effect January 1.

The Athens City Council unanimously passed the changes during Monday night’s meeting.

Under the new rules all street vendors will be located on the south side of East Union Street.  Ten parking spots will be provided for street vendors with “A” and “B” permits.

Permit “A” vendors will now have to pay $1500 a year for a permit.  Permit “B” holders will pay $750 for the first year and then $1125 the next year and must convert to an “A” permit by the third year.

City Council Member Steve Patterson said the ordinance was created to encourage permanent vendors to pay for a permanent spot.

Any spots that are unused by vendors will have meters for public parking.
