On this edition of Conversations from Studio B, WOUB’s General Manager and Director Tom Hodson talks with Michael Williamson, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer of The Washington Post.

Some of Williamson’s awards in photography include the Press Photographers Association’s Crystal Eagle Award in 1994, Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1995 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1990 and 2000, as well as the publication of several books.

Williamson’s most recent book, Someplace Like America: Tales From The New Great Depression, was released in June 2011 and featured a forward by Bruce Springsteen.

Williamson was in Athens to speak at the inaugural Morris Berman Lecture hosted by Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication and the National Press Photographers Foundation.

A main focus throughout Williamson’s career has been the subject of poverty, including a 15 year-long project on homelessness in America.

"Making someone’s photo is an intimate act… I never forget that it’s an intimate act, and the fact that they let me in their house and share their life," said Williamson. "So they’re trusting me, they’re believing in me, they’re hoping that their story will be told accurately… before I hit that shutter, a whole lot of relationship has already occurred."
