Trimble Blanks Belpre 54-0
< < Back to trimble-blanks-belpre-54-0The Trimble Tomcats remain undefeated after a 54-0 victory against the Belpre Golden Eagles Friday, Oct. 18. The win is Trimble's sixth shutout of the season.
Trimble took the field without tight end Jacob Kisch, who suffered a concussion during last week’s game against Eastern. The injury did not prevent the Tomcats from executing their game plan.
Head coach Phil Faires explained earlier in the week that the Tomcats have a tendency to bend on defense and allow teams to gain yardage, but they don’t break.
Coming into Friday’s matchup, Trimble’s goal was to minimize the yards allowed. Faires believes they did so.
“We played well defensively, we shut them down and put them in third and long,” he said. “We had a decent first half but came out and played well in the second half. It was a good team effort.”
The Tomcats defense was very efficient and performed their duties like one cohesive machine.
Trimble only allowed Belpre to gain 41 yards on the night.
The Tomcat offense also looked like a well-oiled machine with 495 yards.
After their first defensive stop, the Tomcats pushed the ball up the field and secured their first touchdown of the night with a 34-yard pass from Konner Standley to Austin Downs.
Standley converted 14 of 18 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns. Downs had eight catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns.
Belpre was able to fight through Trimble’s defense for a moment in the second quarter during its third possession. Face with fourth and 2 in Tomcat territory, the Golden Eagles ran the ball up the middle to keep the drive alive. But three plays after bending and allowing the first down, the Tomcats reasserted their dominance when Justice Jenkins intercepted a pass on Trimble’s 18-yard line.
The Tomcats converted the possession into a touchdown with a 67-yard drive. Jenkins weaved through multiple defenders on a rush into the end zone and put Trimble up 21-0 with five minutes left in the first half.
Jenkins had 13 rushes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
Downs scored the final touchdown of the first half and the first touchdown of the second half off of a 52-yard pass from Standley. Koons and Jenkins collectively contributed two more touchdowns in the second. Kicker Tristan Conway finished up the soring for Trimble when Faires called his number at fullback for a 7-yard touchdown.
Koons rushed five times for 26 yards and a touchdown and had 28 receiving yards and another touchdown.
Belpre quarterback Tavian Miller completed four of 14 passes for 15 yards and an interception. Running back Manny Tullius had 14 rushes for 40 yards.
Trimble (8-0) plays its biggest game since Wahama Friday, Oct. 25 against Southern (7-1). Belpre (3-5) will try to bounce back at Miller (2-6).
