Addis Leads NY Over Alexander in Overtime Win
< < Back to addis-leads-ny-over-alexander-in-overtime-winJessie Addis poured in 29 points as she led the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes to a 59-54 overtime victory in Alexander.
The Lady Spartans (6-1, 3-1) held the lead the entire way, but a strong fourth quarter from Addis evened the score. Addis hit a deep 3-pointer with a hand in her face with 18.1 seconds remaining to tie the game at 49, and Nelsonville-York (6-1, 4-1) controlled the game in the extra four minutes.
After a hot start, Alexander shot just 26 percent after the halftime break. The Lady Buckeyes probably would’ve pulled away in the second half if it wasn’t for the disparity in free throws. N-Y shot 7 of 17 from the line, while Alexander converted on 18 of its 24 attempts.
While the Lady Spartans struggled in the second half, that’s when Addis really went to work. After shooting a cold 1 of 5 from beyond the arc in the first two quarters, Addis nailed four of her next five, including a couple step-backs with hands in her face.
Kaitlyn Hurd is normally a double-double machine for Nelsonville-York, but she shot just 1 of 16 from the field for 2 points. She did grab 9 boards, but her offensive game wasn’t there.
“One of our signs hanging up in the locker room says, ‘find a way,’” Nelsonville-York coach Doug Whiteman said. “We were able to find a way to stay within striking range, and then Jessie Addis took it away.”
The Lady Buckeyes found a way by pressuring all over the court, disrupting the rhythm of Alexander’s offense. The Lady Buckeyes also contained Leah Richardson.
Richardson was held in check most of the night, only scoring 15 points on 4 of 20 shooting. Leah’s younger sister Rachel Richardson added 15 points of her own, but the rest of the Lady Spartans had trouble putting the ball in the basket.
Nelsonville-York will host Trimble (4-4, 2-3) on Monday. Alexander will also be back in action Monday when they visit the Plains to take on Athens (1-8, 0-5).
