The Ohio Bobcats were able to bounce back from a devastating loss on Friday to Kent State by defeating the Clarion Golden Eagles 40-4 Saturday night. Ohio nearly swept the Golden Eagles until the ninth bout of the match.

Sophomore heavyweight Jesse Webb was the lone loss for the Bobcats, losing by major decision 9-1 to Zach DeLuca.

The match was all but over after Cam Kelly’s first bout pin over Roshawn Cooley. Ohio continued to dominate the early bouts with four straight major decisions or pins, giving them an early 20-0 advantage.

Senior Phil Wellington bounced back from a shocking pin to Kyle Connel on Friday to defeat Edgar Ruomo by major decision.

“Losing to him [Connel] especially to Kent State and kind of losing the game for myself really hurt mentally and physically,” Wellington said. “In preparation for this match I tried to focus on who I am as a wrestler.”

Wellington’s win pushed the Bobcats to a 36-0 lead with two bouts remaining. Freshman Shakur Laney defeated Travis Jones to ensure that the Golden Eagles would not leave the Convo without a win.

Clarion looks to bounce back at home against Cleveland State on Jan. 22nd. The Bobcats will try to win their first Mid-American Conference match since Eastern Michigan when Northern Illinois travels to Athens.
