In the before times, Radio Free Athens’ volunteer DJs filled the WOUB AM airwaves most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8p.m. EDT. We’ll be back at it in time, but for now we are supplying weekly playlists and accompanying memes.

From DJ Grumpy Grandma

Recently my friends and I started making playlists for each other to listen to when we miss each other. This is an interesting exercise in determining which songs are the most important to you, and why. Which songs would you want to represent you in some abstract way? It’s also an exercise in determining who your real friends are, and what you consider a friend to be. I know that if I start making a playlist for someone and I start mulling over my choices, trying to make sure my selections are “hip,” that person almost certainly isn’t a friend. Someone whose playlist I can start out with R. Stevie Moore’s “I H8 Ppl,” however, is certainly a friend and a half.

Junior Kimbrough – Meet Me In the City

Pau McCartney – Heart of the Country

Sparklehorse – Chaos of the Galaxy/Happy Man

David Bowie – Waiting for the Man

The Rolling Stones – Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow?

The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 7)

The Beatles – Old Brown Shoe (Anthology 3 Version)

The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

The Postal Service – We Will Become Silhouettes

Life as we know it has gone to the dogs. Literally.  Raad has wanted a dog for a long time and this week he got his wish. We adopted two shelter dogs who are brothers. Mr. Peanut Butter and Mr. Jelly are now living with us and the cat is not happy. This week’s playlist has gone to the dogs as well. Be good to each other.
