NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The matchup between the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes and the Alexander Spartans on Sept. 20 had some major conference impactions that could decide the conference championship later in the year. Last year, the Buckeyes managed to beat the Spartans in both of their meetings. This game on Tuesday would be their first out of two meetings this season.

The 2022 season for the Buckeyes has been going as planned. They came into Alexander having the best overall record in the conference at 10-1 and on a nine-game winning streak. For the Spartans, they come into the game leading the TVC-Ohio at the conference level, but are coming off a 1-2 performance after their participation in the Circleville Invitational.

The Buckeyes came to Alexander High School under a hot crowd Tuesday night with Alexander’s student section out in numbers, but the determination didn’t stop the Buckeyes from lighting up the scoreboard. Nelsonville-York held on to their shots throughout the three sets of play racking up multiple kills and digs to secure the win in a shutout performance.

“It’s definitely a big win for us,” said Nelsonville-York junior Chloe Lehman.

She led the Buckeyes in the kills department Tuesday night with 14 kills and has been huge factor so far for her team this season being the kills leader.

“This win put us in the lead for the TVC, so this is definitely a big step,” she said.”

Head coach Wayne Dicken said there is still a lot of strategy and preparation to become a dominant team in the TVC, even when sometimes calls don’t go the Buckeye’s way.

“A lot of times I would just point to my head,” Dicken said. “If a call doesn’t go our way or if we get a bad hit, we just want to stay mentally tough throughout the whole night and eventually it will even itself out. We start to get our momentum back and play our best volleyball when we are mentally tough.”

The Buckeyes continued their win streak Wednesday night to 11 straight with a 3-0 win against the Warren Warriors. The Nelsonville-York volleyball team plan to continue their win streak with more TVC-Ohio action as they take on the River Valley Raiders on Thursday,  Sept. 22.

Meanwhile, The Alexander Spartans also hope to bounce back from their losing streak on Thursday on the road taking on TVC-Hocking opponent the Eastern Eagles.
