GLOUSTER, Ohio (WOUB) — The Trimble Tomcats and Nelsonville-York Buckeyes met once again in Week 1 with the Tomcats winning a close game, 14-12.

Both teams got off to a slow start, punting multiple times before either team found rhythm.

Trimble was first to find their groove. However, they were snuffed at the goal line. The Buckeyes’ offense stalled out, but a roughing call gave them a new set of downs.

Nelsonville-York made their way down the field, capping off their drive with a 60-yard touchdown run by Gavin Richards.

The rest of the half was back and forth punting. Both defenses carried the first half, sending them to halftime, 6-0 Buckeyes.

Coming out of the locker room, the Tomcats turned the tide on Nelsonville-York and marched down the field. Xavier Cunningham punched it into the endzone on their opening possession of the half, tying the game 6-6.

The Buckeyes’ offensive struggles continued, while Trimble kept their foot on the gas and scored another touchdown, extending their lead.

Nelsonville-York found a late rhythm in the fourth quarter, and a Makhi Williams deep pass sent the Buckeyes inside the 5-yard line. They stepped in for the score, but failed on the 2-point conversion attempt, leaving the score at 14-12, Tomcats.

Nelsonville-York had an opportunity to make one more stop, but they could not get off the field on fourth down, giving Trimble the chance to run out the clock and finish off the Buckeyes.

The Trimble Tomcats will head out to take on the River Pilots in next week’s matchup. For the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes, they head back home to take on the Newark Catholic Green Wave.
