(WOUB) — A neutral site matchup at Parkersburg High School between the Alexander Spartans (1-2) and Belpre Golden Eagles (0-3) ended in a convincing victory that saw the Spartans rack up 520 total yards of offense.
The start of Alexander’s impressive performance came after Belpre’s opening drive ended with a fumble. The Spartans only needed three plays to move the football down the field and ending with a run by running back Isaac Waller to put Spartans in the lead at 6-0, the only lead change of the night would be the score at the end of the first.
Belpre made sure to keep the game in reach for the first quarter with the help of receiver and defensive end Junior Bass, who played a huge role with two sacks, one force fumble and a blocked punt in the first half. An early game dictation by Bass gave Belpre hope to compete throughout the game.
After both teams traded turnovers, Alexander put together a drive that was almost halted. A couple Spartan penalties would push them to a third and goal at the 30-yard line. Quarterback Jordan Schultz’s passed it up the seam to make it a fourth and goal at the five-yard line. Waller would punch in his second rushing touchdown to make it 13-0. Schultz would carry the next drive for the Spartans and ended up in the hands of wide receiver Brody Montgomery to make it 19-0 with a six-yard pass to the front pylon. Alexander would hit a field goal as time expired at the end of the first half with a 22-0 lead after one half.
Alexander rode the wave of energy with passes down the field and physical runs by both Schultz and Waller as they each scored a rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 37-0 in the middle of the third. Waller ended with three rushing touchdowns as Belpre struggled to manage the duo in the backfield. Totaling 225 rushing yards as a team. The offensive line opened the field for the star backfield to walk into the endzone untouched with ease.
With the star players taken out for their big lead, the Spartans tacked on another rushing touchdown to increase the lead to 44-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The defense of Alexander proved they have already improved from their earlier matchups of the season, forcing two more fumbles which one was returned to the house and held Belpre to 40 total yards of offense, which Belpre was not able to enter the red zone of Alexander and had five giveaways.
Alexander’s performance will be one to build off to continue their season, next week the Spartans will travel to Athens to face the Bulldogs who are currently 0-3.
Belpre will return hopeful to their home stadium to host Waterford (2-1) next week, who Alexander already faced earlier this year in week one.
