HEATH, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes traveled to Heath High School to take on the Pleasant Spartans in the Division Six Regional Semi-Final. The Spartans swept the Buckeyes ending Nelsonville-York’s playoff run.

Pleasant started fast in the first set jumping out to a seven to one lead with a kill from Kamryn Cocherl. The Buckeyes called timeout and were able to score two quick points out of the timeout, but the Spartans kept the pressure on. A kill from Pleasants Brooklin Davis brought the score to sixteen to six forcing Nelsonville-York to use their second timeout of the set. The Buckeyes pulled within six points of the Panthers’ lead, 19 to 13, with a block from Gianna Dixon. Despite this effort Pleasant took the set 25 to 18 on a kill from Kenzley Davis.

Nelsonville-York found themselves in a hole early in set two. The Spartans nine to two lead caused a Buckeye timeout. Nelsonville-York cut Pleasants’ lead to seven with a kill from Kyleigh Warren. The Spartans kept pushing, refusing to let the Buckeyes come back. A kill from Kenzley Davis sealed the deal and Pleasant won the set 25 to 17.

Despite their backs against the wall, Nelsonville-York found themselves in a familiar position to start the third set. The Spartans went on a six-point run behind the aggressive serving of Madi Pendleton. Warren and Dixon tried to keep the Buckeyes in the game with big swings in the front row, but it was not enough to stop Pleasant. Cocherl took control offensively for the Spartans, and Nelsonville-York had no answer. Pleasant took the set twenty-five to nine and the match in a sweep.

Although the Buckeyes season has come to an end, head coach Wayne Dicken is proud of his team. When asked what he was most proud of this season he said it was how his seniors handled the pressure.

“Expectations were high for this season,” he said. “I am most proud of how this team was able to handle that pressure, win the league and district again, and continue to make history for our program.”

Nelsonville-York finished the season with a record of twenty-two and three. Pleasant will play the Garaway Pirates in the Regional Final on Saturday.
