Last Second Shot Allows Lady Spartans to Remain Undefeated

With six seconds left in the fourth quarter, Alexander’s Leah Richardson scored a game-winning lay up, maintaining the Lady Spartans’ undefeated record.
Alexander handed Vinton County its first loss of the season, in a 46-44 victory.
After a first half in which the Lady Spartans shot 7 for 28 in field goal shooting, Alexander came out of the locker room transformed.
“The lid is going to break, we are going to be fine, someone is going to hit a shot,” head coach Corey McKnight told his team after a shaky first half.
Junior standout, Leah Richardson, pushed the Lady Spartans, scoring 14 points in the second half. Richardson found the basket in an effortless manner, and her quick release made her almost impossible to defend down the stretch. She finished with 22 points, four assists and two steals on the night.
Nicole Hundall also contributed adding nine points for the Lady Spartans’ comeback. Hundall notched five rebounds and two steals as well.
The Lady Spartans struggled early due to the Lady Vikings’ relentless defense and high-paced offense. Michaela Puckett led the Lady Vikings throughout the game, scoring 13 points and nabbing seven rebounds, a team high. Puckett’s performance allowed the Lady Vikings’ to lead 15-3 before the half.
Despite a last minute effort by Puckett, who hit two quick field goals to tie the game with under a minute left, the Lady Vikings’ offense and defense caved under the Lady Spartans’ second half ,momentum shift.
Both teams return to play at home. Alexander (3-0) hosts Federal Hocking Dec. 5 and hopes to remain undefeated. Vinton County (2-1) battles against Nelsonville-York Dec. 7.
