Southern Lady Tornadoes Were Blown Away by Lady Marauders
< < Back to ?p=205738The Meigs Lady Marauders blew away the Southern Lady Tornadoes Thursday tonight at Southern High School 57-24. The Marauders lost their first game of the season Monday night 64-38, but that didn’t stop them from making a comeback in tonight’s game.
“We refocused ourselves on being able to take physical contact. Morgan really came at us and I think that disrupted our offense. Defensively we’re always up in people’s faces, but offensively we worked on a few things and it came through this evening,” Meigs Coach Jarrod Kasun said about practice this week, after being defeated by Morgan High School.
The girls had suffocating defense, starting in the first half, making it difficult for the Tornadoes to get the ball in the basket. It was obvious how the Tornadoes were just not as talented as the Marauders because they were making sloppy passes and losing possession of the ball multiple times throughout the game. The Marauders took advantage of these mishaps and ultimately won the game.
Looking on the offensive side of things, Meigs star player, number 30 Cassidy Betzing, did not play her best game tonight. She scored 9 of the 57 points and had a total of 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. Coach Kasun mentioned how he is trying to take some of the load off of her this season:
“We are trying to move Cassidy off of the ball so she won’t have to work so hard to bring the ball up the court. Cassidy was getting some looks, it wasn’t like she didn’t get her chances, she just wasn’t getting the ball in the hoop. We have others who can score as well. Our motto is we’re going to shoot it when we’re open.”
Another key player for the Marauders, number 24 Maddy Fields, had a great game tonight, leading the team with 11 baskets. The game didn’t just come easy for the Marauders, however. The girls were missing plenty of open rebounds from watching the ball, instead of following it. This gave Southern the ball to run down the court for multiple layups.
Ultimately, the Tornadoes had multiple turnovers, with Meigs grabbing the ball out of their hands, costing them the game.
Coach Kasun was very proud of his girls tonight and has big goals for the team this season:
“Our goal is to contend for the League title. It’s going to be tough. It should be a good fight. Our goal is to win the league and then do something when tournaments come around.”
