The West Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Child Nutrition started its annual program Wednesday at Spring Hill Elementary School in Huntington. The program aims to make sure children in lower-income areas continue to receive free, nutritious meals through the summer break.
West Virginia state schools superintendent Steve Paine says 128 agencies are participating with 480 feeding locations. Providers include local boards of education, parks and recreation departments, colleges and universities, community action agencies and faith-based groups.

An average 178,000 West Virginia schoolchildren have access to free and reduced-price meals at school during the school year.
