Two Belpre Council Members Hold Off Challengers In Republican Primary

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Two Belpre City Council incumbents defeated their challengers Tuesday in the Republican primary.
Council President Larry Martin captured 270 votes, or 55.33 percent. His opponent, Donna Miller, drew 218 votes, or 44.67 percent.
Council Member At Large David Ferguson held off his opponent, John Ruth, with 331 votes, or 56.10 percent, to Ruth’s 259 votes, or 43.9 percent.
In the Republican primary for Belpre city auditor, Tina Nolan won with 255 votes, or 51.93 percent. Her opponent, Alison Holland, received 236 votes, or 48.07 percent. The two were vying to replace Leslie Pittenger, Belpre’s auditor for three terms, who is stepping down at the end of this year.
In other Washington County election results, voters soundly rejected a proposed three-quarters of a percent income tax that would have helped fund the Marietta School District starting next year and continuing for five years. The vote was 30.35 percent for the tax and 69.65 percent against.
Meanwhile, three five-year levies to support fire protection, ambulance service and emergency medical services in Marietta Township drew overwhelming support. A 1.6 mills levy passed by a margin of 73.05 percent to 26.95 percent; a 1 mill levy passed by a margin of 75.10 percent to 24.9 percent; and a 0.5 mill levy passed by a margin of 77.19 percent to 22.81 percent.
Voters in Belpre Township passed a 2.6 mills levy to support ambulance/emergency medical services with a vote of 73.49 percent to 26.51 percent.
A 2.6 mills levy in Decatur Township to support ambulance/emergency medical services also passed, with a vote of 73.83 percent to 26.17 percent.
And a 1.5 mills levy for the East Muskingum Fire District was approved with a vote of 73.44 percent to 26.56 percent.
