VIDEO: Food Pantry Gifts Extra Produce to Athens Co. Agency
< < Back toThe Lottridge food pantry, highlighted in a "Dateline NBC" special last year for direly low supplies, actually had so much food today, they gifted it to another agency.
The Friends and Neighbors Community Choice Food Pantry handed out free produce for two hours this afternoon at the Athens County Job and Family Services. Nick Claussen, Community Relations Coordinator for AC JFS, says poverty rates in 2009 in Athens County were 32.9% — more than double the national average.
The distribution was spur-of-the-moment since the food center had received the extra produce.
Organizers spread the word through Facebook, emails and radio announcements. Nearly 160 individuals or families took advantage of the available food. Eligible recipients had to be at or below 200% of the federal poverty rate. Family and indviduals were able to check their eligibility at the agency.
